OKUNI
Okuni is a musical based on the real-life story of a woman named Okuni who created Kabuki and then was forgotten by history for centuries. Bringing the world of 17th century Japan to life with pop music and drag, Okuni explores the life of an artist who made theatre in the dry riverbeds of Kyoto, became the voice of the city's outcasts, the teahouse girls, and the masterless samurai, and eventually went toe to toe with the authoritarian regime in power as they tried to appropriate her work and ultimately silence her.
